"...there is a long counter-history of religious focus on tolerance as a central virtue -- on welcoming the stranger and loving one's neighbour.  “Who is my Neighbor?” - one of the central Christian narratives asks.  Jesus responds by telling the story of the Good Samaritan -- a foreigner, a representative of the Other, who reaches out sympathetically, across ethnic and cultural divides, to show mercy to the fallen stranger at the side of the road."

The Aga Khan Development Network responds to the COVID-19 pandemic
AKDN is working to find creative and effective solutions to help improve quality of life for those affected by this pandemic.  Working together, several AKDN agencies are treating patients, testing suspected cases, and advising national authorities on their responses and preparedness.  A cross-AKDN task force is planning how best to harness its institutions and activities to amplify its responses in order to address the various effects of this pandemic on public health, economic well-being, and social cohesion.  Agencies involved with education are providing creative ways to sustain learning.  To the full article, click here.
Volunteering throughout COVID-19 (UK)
If you are  UK-based and healthy, you can serve vulnerable people across the country.  The NHS and the British Red Cross are recruiting volunteers for in-person, mobile, and teleconferencing roles.  Volunteers must be 18+ and healthy with no symptoms.  Those in higher-risk groups (including those over 70, those who are pregnant or with underlying medical conditions) will be able to offer support by telephone.

In order for us to capture information on how many Jamati members sign up to volunteer with these or other appeals, we request the Jamat to email akysb.info@iiuk.org  to let us know if you sign up to these initiatives.

Information on how to volunteer within the Ismaili community will be shared shortly.

Savvy Saving
Some of us have experienced sudden changes in our employment and financial circumstances because of COVID-19.  If meeting your monthly mortgage payments has become difficult, the government has announced they are working with mortgage providers to provide support with options such as a three-month mortgage holiday. Please speak to your lender to understand if you are eligible, the measures available and the resulting change in your terms.  Although a mortgage holiday could provide you with temporary relief, it will mean that your balance and payments could be higher than they were before the relief measure.

ITREB Thought of the Day: #TariqahThursday
Noah’s Ark: A family in lockdown - For 40 days and 40 nights, Noah’s family was confined to an Ark. They did not have Internet, phone, TV, YouTube, Facebook or Netflix.  They listened to the rain as it poured down from the sky.  They reflected and contemplated, took care of each other, and of the animals; and Allah took care of them.  Today, we face difficult and isolating times but we are not alone.  We must be patient and brave during this time.  Until, like the dove that brought the olive branch, the rain stops and a rainbow shines forth, telling us that all is well again.
Clap for Our Carers
Please join us on: 26 March at 8pm for a big applause (from front doors, garden, balcony, windows, living rooms, etc) to show all nurses, doctors, GPs and carers our appreciation for their ongoing hard work and fight against the virus.  Learn more here.
