Did you know, Muslims were responsible for transferring the practice of papermaking from China to Europe, where the print revolution took place in the late 15th century? Since then, the spread of paper has been fundamental to modern civilisation. Muslims first came across paper in Central Asia in the 8th century, and quickly replaced the papyrus and parchment that was used at the time. Beginning in government offices, the use of paper soon spread to all segments of society. By the middle of the 9th century, the Papersellers’ Street in historic Baghdad had over 100 shops selling books and paper. Medieval libraries in the Muslim world had hundreds of thousands of volumes far outnumbering the comparatively small monastic and university libraries in the West. Why not take a fresh piece of paper today and write or draw the first thing that comes to mind?
