ITREB Thought of the Day #WednesdayWisdom
Looking like something from a fairytale, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, has become a popular tourist destination. With its sharp pencil-like spires reaching to the sky, its grand domes and sweeping arches, it was a centre of Christian worship for almost 900 years. Under the rule of Justinian I in the 530s CE and his successors thereafter, it survived centuries of earthquakes, rebuilding and restoration. For Justinian I, the resurrection of Hagia Sophia was a major achievement. After 1453, the church was converted into a mosque under the Ottoman Muslim rule of Constantinople, after which subsequent Ottoman sultans added to the building. In 1934, the secular government of Turkey turned the mosque into a museum, and today the building continues to remind visitors of the importance of buildings as an exploration of diverse religious and cultural expression. Visit the Hagia Sophia virtually here, and see what you can find.
