Islam, by contrast, is a total religion guiding all aspects of a Muslim’s life. The faith establishes the moral framework within which material endeavour is to be encouraged and a ‘social conscience’ has always been a key part of our lives. Hence, as Imam, I am concerned with the encouragement of all forms of endeavour and – further – with the quality of its performance, because that affects the quality of human life. What is done must be done honestly, sincerely and well.

Singalong Saturdays:
AKYSB presents Singalong Saturday. Shukran is a beautiful piece collaboratively composed by members of ‘Ruhi’, a multi-cultural musical ensemble, celebrates diversity through music. It seamlessly brings together melodic, soulful raags from the East, spiritually uplifting styles from the Middle East, and upbeat rhythms of the West also highlighting a rap! Diversity is also reflected in the lyrics covering four languages, Arabic, Hindi, English, Persian, taking inspiration from esteemed poets. Embedded throughout the song are the heartfelt sentiments of a murid for their Lord, with the words ‘Shukran! Ya Noor Azalee!’ Our gratitude, O Eternal Light! Watch Shukran here. If you would like to be featured on singalong Saturday please email ice@iiuk.org.

ITREB Thought of the Day: #SaturdaySchool
Did you know, a thousand years ago, some of the most accurate and precious maps were drawn by Muslim explorers? At that time, countries, continents, and waterways were not yet known, but as people began to travel, trade, and explore, the need for correct maps arose. In the 12th century, Al Idrisi interviewed thousands of travellers and compiled a drawing, which is believed to be the oldest map to show Europe, North Africa, and Asia. It was commissioned by the Norman king Roger II of Sicily, and took Al Idrisi 15 years to complete. He drew outlines of the various landmasses and wrote about the Earth’s hemispheres, seas, gulfs, and climatic zones. Take a look at a world map today, and see what you can find!
