During the month of Ramadan, as we seek to come closer to the Divine, we may wish to consider Islam’s central idea of Tawhid – or the Oneness of Allah. Sufi mystics and Muslim intellectuals including the Ikhwan al-Safa, reflecting on Tawhid, have proposed that there is only one absolute universal reality, and that reality is the Divine. This idea is expressed in modern times as the concept of the Universe.

At the inaugural ceremony of the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Ottawa, Canada in 2008, Mawlana Hazar Imam explained,

In Islamic thought…beauty and mystery are not separated from intellect – in fact the reverse is true. As we use our intellect to gain new knowledge about Creation, we come to see even more profoundly the depth and breadth of its mysteries… What we feel, even as we learn, is an ever-renewed sense of wonder, indeed a powerful sense of awe – and of Divine inspiration. Using rock crystal’s iridescent mystery as an inspiration for this building, does indeed provide an appropriate symbol of the Timelessness, the Power and the Mystery of Allah as the Lord of Creation. (6th December, 2008, Ottawa, Canada)

This creation is ever unfolding and gives us more to discover each day. As the Holy Quran tells us in Sura 2, Ayat 115: “So wherever you (might) turn, there is the Face of Allah.”

ITREB Thought of the Day: #FridayFaith
During the month of Ramadan, the idea of social conscience, of helping others and being mindful of vulnerable people is a cornerstone of piety for the faithful. Following the example of the Prophet, of Hazrat Ali, and our Imams, the duty of care towards the poor, the destitute and the under-privileged is an integral aspect of Islam’s notion of social justice in general, and of observing Ramadan in particular. For Muslims, caring for people facing difficult times is a duty for those who have been blessed. In honouring the rights of the disenfranchised by sharing the gifts of Allah’s blessings upon them, Muslims uphold the Quranic injunction of social equity.
