One of the central challenges that faces our world today is the challenge of harmonising many highly diversified voices within an increasingly globalised world. I use the word “harmonising” carefully - for our ideal here is not a chorus that sings in unison, but one that blends many distinctive voices into an intelligent, resonant whole.  But to do that requires a deep understanding of what makes each voice distinctive.  And that is the essential function of the educational endeavours that will make this place their home.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Sufi tradition tells the story of a great encounter between Ibn Rushd, known in Europe as Averroes – the founder of rationalism and a master of the physical sciences; and Ibn Arabi, known as Sheikh al-Akbar – mystic, scholar of metaphysics and master of the spiritual realm. Ibn Rushd, already famous and admired for his methodical analysis and scientific mind, is curious to meet the young novice Ibn Arabi, whose allegorical, intuitive wisdom is already causing a stir among 13th century Muslim scholars. Ibn Rushd offers Ibn Arabi a concrete worldview, established by rigorous study and experimentation. “Yes,” replies Ibn Arabi and the senior scholar smiles, resplendent in the comfort of his own knowledge. “And no,” Ibn Arabi continues. Rational, methodical science – complacent in its own certitude, is useful yes, but without due recourse to the metaphysical and the spiritual, its worldview is hollow and lacking. As another great physicist, Albert Einstein, wrote: “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the Mysterious — the knowledge of the existence of something unfathomable to us, the manifestation of the most profound reason coupled with the most brilliant beauty.”
