[My goal] is to improve the quality of life and that indeed involves reducing poverty, but it also provides people with the means to improve their quality of life. That is the goal. For example, we try to eliminate disease when we can eliminate it, we want to build national or international institutions, such as universities, schools and hospitals which help the community and societies. It is therefore necessary for the community to be valued, recognised and its institutions must serve the countries in which they are based.
Be Aware of Online Fraud
The Government has warned of an increase in cyber fraud targeting the vulnerable. To help protect yourself from online fraud you should:
  • Reject offers that come out of the blue

  • Get the name of the company that is contacting you and establish their credentials. In the case of a regulated financial services firm, this can be done by searching the FCA’s Financial Services Register here

  • Beware of adverts on social media channels and paid for/sponsored adverts online

  • Do not click on links or open emails or attachments from senders that you don’t already know

  • Be wary of promised returns that sound too good to be true

  • Take your time to perform all the checks you need, even if this means turning down an ‘amazing deal’

  • Do not give out personal details (e.g. bank details, passwords and pin numbers, addresses, existing insurance/pensions/investment details)

  • Seek financial guidance or advice before changing your pension arrangements, making other financial investments or purchasing financial products

For more advice on how to protect yourself from online fraud or scams, visit the FCA’s ScamSmart website. For other tips, view the latest updates on AKEPB’s Savvy Saving column.

Our fellow brothers and sisters from all around the globe also appreciate the joy music brings us, and the way it can connect us to the Divine. Earlier this month Ismaili Children around the globe came together to create ‘Ya Allah - You are the One’.
If you would like to be featured on Singalong Saturday please email: ice@iiuk.org.

‘The Do One Better!’ Podcast with Alberto Lidji
Recommended by Hasina Daya, Humanitarian Policy and Programme Manager at the Department for International Development.
“As an Ismaili and an International Development professional, I relish opportunities to learn about the work of the AKDN. ‘The Do One Better!’ Podcast has interviewed 2 AKF CEOs providing a Global Strategic Overview of AKDN and an account from the front lines. The podcast discusses the impact of grassroots female empowerment and explores how AKDN ensures development work is long-lasting.”

Reflections Phone Line
Members of the Jamat who do not have Internet access and are unable to participate in the institutional evening programmes are encouraged to call into our weekly Reflections Phone Line, with separate programmes in English and Gujarati.
Due to popular demand we have now introduced a telephone number dedicated to the messages shared by the President of the UK National Council, Alijah Naushad Jivraj, in his Saturday addresses to the Jamat. A gist of the message in Gujarati, highlighting the key points, will be included as part of the Gujarati programming. This week's programme will be available from 2pm BST on Sunday 14 June, and will include:
  • English Programme - Dial 0333 015 1132 – ITREB talk by Alwaez Moyez Alwani – “Strengthening your spiritual core”

  • Gujarati Programme - Dial 0333 015 1133 – Talk by Dr Karim Gulamali, continuation of the series

  • English Programme - Dial 0333 015 1134 – Message from the President of the UK National Council

Programmes will be available to listen to from Sunday to Saturday each week and can be accessed 24 hours a day.
Calls to 0333 numbers cost no more than a national rate call to local 01 or 02 numbers. Mobile phone tariffs allow the calling of 0333 numbers in their monthly quota of telephone minutes - therefore, provided you have not used your quota of minutes for the month, you will not be charged anything extra for calling an 0333 number.
Members of the Jamat are asked to share this information with other members of their family who do not have access to the Internet. Watch this space: We will soon be launching a Podcast Telephone Line which will allow us to share important information and updates from the Central Institutions on employment, the economy, education, faith & wellbeing.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Are you a science fiction fan? Did you know that what many believe was the very first science fiction novel, and the earliest Arabic novel, Theologus Autodidactus (the Self-taught Theologian) was written by the Syrian Muslim scholar Ibn al-Nafis in 1210? The book’s hero, Kamil, is spontaneously generated inside a cave. He grows up in the wild on a deserted island. Then, castaways from a shipwreck take him back to a city (most likely Damascus) where he encounters human civilisation. Al-Nafis was a 13th century Syrian scholar of medicine, biology, jurisprudence, philosophy and Theology, and is most famous for being the first anatomist to explain the pulmonary circulation of the blood - four centuries before the English physician William Harvey. Theologus Autodidactus, which touches on futurology, the apocalypse, and the afterlife, was translated into English in 1968, and is available online. Happy reading!
