The Imamat’s involvement with this private initiative, especially in the economic field, deserves explanation to anyone educated in the Augustinian Christian philosophy which tends to divide the spiritual from the material. Islam, by contrast, is a total religion guiding all aspects of a Muslim’s life. The faith establishes the moral framework within which material endeavour is to be encouraged and a ‘social conscience’ has always been a key part of our lives. Hence, as Imam, I am concerned with the encouragement of all forms of endeavour and – further – with the quality of its performance, because that affects the quality of human life. What is done must be done honestly, sincerely and well.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Muslims, across a diversity of cultural heritages, have recognised the sacred through music. Traditional musical instruments such as the daf, ney and oud, tabla, santur and shehnai along with sublime and often dramatic vocal renditions express the passionate spectrum of human emotion. Songs of devotion, recited as acts of prayer, set the human spirit free, on its ascent towards the Divine. Our rich musical heritage helps us to define who we are and to remember where we have come from. Sunday 21 June marks the international Fete de la Musique, a celebration of all types of music from traditional, classical and jazz to techno, hip-hop and pop, that takes over the streets of participating cities and towns. The fete began 38 years ago when public concerts took over the streets of Paris. This weekend, as lockdowns begin to ease, 120 countries around the world will mark the summer solstice with live bands, drummers, singers, DJs and much more.
