When I came to my role as Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community - just sixty years ago - I found it impossible to accept the notion of inevitably clashing civilisations.  My own early life experiences were in both worlds  – and so were those of millions of Muslim peoples.  So rather than talk about clashing civilisations, I began to talk - again and again, as some of you may recall - about a clash of ignorances.  And the assumption behind that phrase was that ignorance could yield to understanding through the power of education…My strong expectation is that, from this new home, our education-oriented institutions will contribute powerfully to building new bridges of understanding across the gulfs of ignorance.
Aga Khan Centre: Two Year Anniversary
Friday 26 June 2020 marked the two year anniversary of the official inauguration of the Aga Khan Centre (AKC) in King’s Cross, at the heart of London’s thriving Knowledge Quarter. The AKC was opened in 2018 by The Prince of Wales in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam as part of  Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visit to the UK as a guest of Her Majesty’s Government, during the Diamond Jubilee year. The AKC is a place for education, knowledge, cultural exchange and insight into Muslim civilisations and is also home to a number of our organisations, including the IIS, AKU-ISMC and AKF UK, which together work to bridge the gap in understanding about Muslim cultures and to connect the public to global development issues and the work of the Aga Khan Foundation.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Scientists today are unsure whether the physical universe has a size that can be measured (meaning it is finite), or whether it never ends and is impossible to measure (meaning it is infinite). What most do agree on is that the universe is unfathomably large and that the space between the various galaxies is getting bigger all the time. Most scientists believe it is currently expanding faster than the speed of light! The physical universe gives us an idea of how Supreme the Creator is. The Qur’an says, “We have built the universe with skill and power; and truly, it is We who are steadily expanding it. (51:47). The divine name al-Mutakabbir means the Supreme. God is always pushing back the boundaries of what we think is possible. Try looking up at the starry sky and imagine an expanding universe. How does it make you feel?
