ITREB Thought of the Day
Did you know the first ever flying machine was made by Abbas Ibn Firnas, a Muslim musician and poet? An astronomer, chemist, doctor and engineer, Ibn Firnas lived during the 9th century in Cordoba, Andalusia. Known in Latin as Armen Firman, he built the world’s first mechanical planetarium, invented processes for creating colourless glass and carving rock crystal, designed the Al-Maqata water clock and made the first corrective reading lenses. His use of Indian astronomical tables changed the course of European science. However, he is most famous for being the first man to fly – more than 1,000 years before the Wright brothers and 600 years before Leonardo Da Vinci. In 875, at the age of 70, Ibn Firnas made a glider using wood, silk and bird feathers. He climbed into it and launched off the La Arruzafa hills near Cordoba, managing a successful flight of 10 minutes. In 1976, a crater on the moon was named after him.
