The Ismaili Imamat is a supra-national entity, representing the succession of Imams since the time of the Prophet.  But let me clarify something more about the history of that role, in both the Sunni and Shia interpretations of the Muslim faith.
The Sunni position is that the Prophet nominated no successor, and that spiritual-moral authority belongs to those who are learned in matters of religious law.  As a result, there are many Sunni imams in a given time and place.  But others believed that the Prophet had designated his cousin and son-in-law, Ali, as his successor. From that early division, a host of further distinctions grew up — but the question of rightful leadership remains central.  In time, the Shia were also sub-divided over this question, so that today the Ismailis are the only Shia community who, throughout history, have been led by a living, hereditary Imam in direct descent from the Prophet.

AKTC eCards for Imamat Day
For the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, culture is the lasting imprint of a civilisation: the environments in which we live – both built and natural, the cultures that surround us, the music we hear, the poetry we remember, the integrity of our social interactions, the quality of the air we breathe and the purity of our water - implicitly determine how we imagine ourselves and our realities.
As Imamat Day approaches, reach out to friends, family members and colleagues to wish them Mubarak. Choose from a selection of AKTC eCards created by ITREB UK for The Ismaili, add a personal message and send your greetings to multiple contacts at the same time. Visit the.ismaili/ecards to view the selection and send your eCard.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Ibn Jubayr was a geographer, traveller and poet from Andalusia. His Rihla - a creative travelogue detailing his journey from Granada to perform the Hajj at Mecca founded the genre of the Muslim travelogue, later to be copied by European adventure travellers to the East.  It was translated into Greek and Latin upon publication and today translations exist in every major language. On 24 February 1183, he sailed across the Strait of Gibraltar to Ceuta, under Muslim rule in Spain. From there he set sail for Alexandria, past the Balearic Islands, the west coast of Sardinia, Sicily and Crete onto the North African coastline of Alexandria. From Cairo, he travelled by land to Mecca, visiting Medina, Damascus, Mosul, Acre, Baghdad and Jerusalem. His visual narratives were beautifully detailed, describing geographic locations, architecture, social, cultural and political norms. He wrote with a modern day anthropologist’s eye and historians would rely on his account for centuries to come.
