Everywhere, whether in the simplest mosque schools or in universities, teaching was regarded as a mission undertaken for the service of God. Revenue from endowments provided students with stipends and no time limit was set for the acquisition of knowledge. Above all, following the guidance of the Holy Quran, there was freedom of enquiry and research. The result was a magnificent flowering of artistic and intellectual activity throughout the Umma.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Among the beautiful names of Allah, al-Latif means the Subtle. Something subtle is refined, gentle, pleasing, and mysterious. The sense of smell is said to be our most subtle sense. We can’t see a scent, and aromas can be difficult to describe, but we experience them and they affect us in subtle ways. The beauty, love, and intelligence of Allah is like this: it can be impossible to describe, but moves us in a very deep place. The gifts that God gives us are often subtle too - we might not realise we have them. Have you noticed something or someone loud, clumsy, or overbearing - the opposite of subtle? What effect did they have, and which do you prefer?
