I have observed in the Western world a deeply changing pattern of human relations. The anchors of moral behaviour appear to have dragged to such depths that they no longer hold firm the ship of life: what was once wrong is now simply unconventional, and for the sake of individual freedom must be tolerated. What is tolerated soon becomes accepted. Contrarily, what was once right is now viewed as outdated, old fashioned and is often the target of ridicule.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Islam places great importance on Ethics. The Arabic word Akhlaq connotes the refinement of one’s character based on an inner set of beliefs. The Holy Qur’an names Tazkiya as among the main objectives of Muhammad’s Prophethood (pbuh). Tazkiya signifies the purification of the soul by choosing moral conduct and good behaviour over the temptation of self-serving, baser instincts – in fact for Muslims this is what defines human dignity and nobility. Today, as we navigate our complex, modern lives, it can be tricky to find our ethical compass. Hazrat Ali in his Nahj al-Balagha (The way of Eloquence) provides us with a good checklist: Courage, Forgiveness, Generosity, Geniality, Gratitude, Humility, Non-Attachment, Patience, Trust-keeping, Truthfulness, and above all Compassion for humankind.
