Everywhere, whether in the simplest mosque schools or in universities, teaching was regarded as a mission undertaken for the service of God. Revenue from endowments provided students with stipends and no time limit was set for the acquisition of knowledge. Above all, following the guidance of the Holy Quran, there was freedom of enquiry and research. The result was a magnificent flowering of artistic and intellectual activity throughout the Umma.
Staying Safe and Healthy- Eid al-Adha
This Eid weekend we can help protect each other from Covid-19 by staying alert. Eid al-Adha is known as the festival of sacrifice. We have all made sacrifices in recent months, in adapting to celebrating festivals and other occasions remotely and virtually. Although Eid is traditionally a time to come together, the safety and health of the Jamat is of paramount importance, and we would urge all members of the Jamat to stay at home and refrain from large gatherings or group celebrations during this time. We should remain mindful of our friends and family members who may be vulnerable or have underlying health issues. It is vital that we all continue to maintain social distancing during festivities and practice frequent handwashing. If you need to leave home, it is important to wear a face covering to protect yourself and others around you. Let’s remain hopeful, as we prepare to celebrate Eid as One Jamat, together at home.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Like other Muslim communities across the world, Ismaili Jamats commemorate Eid al-Adha each year. During the Fatimid period, this occasion was often marked with the Imam-Caliph leading a procession to a designated place for the Eid prayers. The ceremonies included a sermon or khutba by the Imam-Caliph, followed by the ritual sacrifice and the distribution of its offering among the poor and the needy, in addition to distribution of other gifts. In the Ismaili tradition, the offering of voluntary services by murids is an expression of their love and devotion to the Imam-of-the-Time. These services are rendered through the commitment of time, knowledge, skills and resources for the benefit of others. Eid al-Adha also provides an opportunity to reflect on the work that the Imam has undertaken for the Jamat and other communities across the world. It is reflected in his continual efforts for the uplift of the Jamat and the improvement of the quality of life of people in need.
