As Imam, I am concerned with the encouragement of all forms of endeavour and – further – with the quality of its performance, because that affects the quality of human life. What is done must be done honestly, sincerely and well.
We cannot afford to be incompetent, because if we are we damage the people we seek to serve.
Eid-e Ghadir
In March 632, during the last year of his life, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) made his final pilgrimage to Mecca. He invited his companions and believers among the early Muslim community to accompany him on his final Hajj to the Kaaba. On their return journey to Medina, the Prophet asked his followers to stop at an oasis called Ghadir Khumm (present day Al-Juhfah), 183 kilometres outside Mecca, near the Red Sea, and asked his companions to build a small platform for him to address the Ummah.
Over 100,000 Muslims gathered at Ghadir Khumm to hear the Prophet’s farewell sermon. As he stepped onto the platform, he took hold of Hazrat Ali’s hand to accompany him. As the two men stood together to face the community of believers, the Prophet raised Ali’s hand, still in his, and declared, “Man kuntu mawlahu fa haaza Aliyyun mawlahu.” (He who considers me his Mawla, this man Ali is his Mawla). Tomorrow on 18 Dhu Al-Hijjah of the Islamic calendar, Shia Muslims around the world commemorate this event at Ghadir Khumm, that we refer to and celebrate as Eid-e Ghadir.

ITREB Thought of the Day
Hazrat Ali was one the five members of the Ahl al-Bayt - the family of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The Ahl al-Bayt are given special status in the Holy Qur’an. One verse proclaims: “God wishes to keep uncleanness away from you, Ahl al-Bayt, and to purify you thoroughly.” In the Hadith al-Thaqalayn, the Prophet said that he was leaving behind him ‘two weighty matters’ - the Book of Allah and the Ahl al-Bayt. In the Shia tradition, the Ahl al-Bayt are Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Ali, Bibi Fatima, Hazrat Hasan, Hazrat Husayn, and the Imams directly descended from them. Ismaili Centres and Jamatkhanas often feature calligraphic depictions of these names. Can you guess which Ismaili Centre is pictured above?
