It is no exaggeration to say that the original Christian universities of the Latin West, at Paris, Bologna and Oxford, indeed the whole European Renaissance, received a vital influx of new knowledge from Islam: an influx from which the later Western colleges and universities, including those of North America, were to benefit in turn.

WAP Recommends
The IIS Secondary Curriculum Recommended by Dr Shazma Mawani, Chairmanbanu of ITREB "Delve into these beautiful books to learn about Islamic history, diverse interpretations of the Holy Qur’an and its spiritual legacy. Discover inspirational women from Fatimid, Ottoman and Mughal empires. Women held notable roles in Islamic civilisations as businesswomen, teachers and patrons of art and architecture. The books also address contemporary questions and provide a positive narrative in today’s challenging landscape. Highly recommended for youth, parents and anyone seeking to enhance their knowledge of our Ismaili faith."  For more information please click on Kitab Corner.

ITREB Thought Of The Day
An Alam, or processional standard, is used during Shia processions and important events, particularly on the day of Ashura, the tenth day of the month of Muharram, to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain, in the seventh century in Karbala, modern-day Iraq. They are usually made of gilded and openwork brass, with intricate figures and engravings such as lions, dragons, and birds. Alams are detailed with arabesque designs and calligraphy, often bearing the names of Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Ali, and other members of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). The Aga Khan Museum has a wide collection of artefacts from the history of Muslim civilisations including this Alam (pictured) and others.
